in response to shirleybill... Hi,
I heard a lot about stem cell research on the news. I didn't have much time to look beyond what was on the newspaper front page and in the headlines. Being a biomedical engineering student provides a different perspective on health services than what popular and public news coverage offer. I had some spare time over the holidays to learn a little about stem cells. I was a little surprised to find out that they have a lot in common with tumors. I suppose if someone is healthy they may not know what a tumor is, and couldn't care less.
The public may have been mislead into thinking that stem cells were a magic talisman to ward off disease, and improve life expectancy. It's widely known in medical communities that stem cells are dangerous, and could switch on malignant properties unexpectedly. Researchers still hope that the key to successful tissue regeneration can be found with stem cells. Clinical trials on this are planned.
